Capturing Dramatic Seascapes: Wild Waves Photography Techniques at Dingle, Ireland

Following my recent adventure at Minard, where I captured some dramatic seascapes, I found myself drawn back to the rugged beauty of the Dingle Peninsula. This time, the plan was to make the most of a promising forecast. With great light expected and waves set to be particularly large, I decided to revisit a spot I’ve photographed before: the old, disused Dunquin Pier.

Irelands coastal beauty

My latest photography adventure took me to Minard, a striking location on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. Colour or Black & White?

I team up with my good friend Diarmuid O'Donovan (DOD) for a photography outing at Two Mile Gate near Killaloe. Discovering Mayo: Stunning Landscapes and Hidden Gems

I've explored many areas in Ireland over the years. However, one spot that I've done very little exploration in is County Mayo. This is a stunning part of the world, and I'm glad I took the opportunity to traverse it while I was recently on another trip with Bernard. Being from Cork, which is in the southern part of Ireland, means that I have to be hitting this area with a specific destination in mind. Given that I was here for a shoot with Bernard, we decided to take a loop trip around the area so I could see it for myself and experience all it has to offer.

After a short drive along a winding and stunning road, we stopped, jumped out and took another short walk towards one hell of a picturesque scene. A solitary white-walled fisherman’s hut sitting right next to the water’s edge, with many fantastic shooting locations along the banks, promised to yield several shots for us both.

Visiting an Icon

Whale watching is quite popular here plus island hopping over to Sherkin and Cape Clear, which promise to take you back in time to a land not influenced by the manic speed the rest of the world goes through. This area is simply stunning overall, and sitting right on the cliffs that shelter the bay, sits a structure erected to serve as a beacon to the West and a symbol to all of just how great this place is.

10 Minute Long Exposure, Madness or Genuis?

The wind was still blowing from the night before, so I opted to go for an ultra-long exposure of 10 minutes. This would totally smooth out the water, but more importantly, it would allow the movement of the clouds to create streaks in my This works particularly well when the wind is either blowing directly towards the camera or away, as it creates bright and darker areas in the direction of the frame. Now, I didn’t calculate exactly what I was going to set my exposure, aperture, and ISO to; I just winged it, and when the image had finished cooking, I was happy with what I had on the back of the camera. I used my 10-stop filter to achieve this, and while I knew it would be a gamble, I was kind of sure I wouldn't blow my highlights, and then I would be able to recover the shadows in post later.
