Discovering Mayo: Stunning Landscapes and Hidden Gems

I've explored many areas in Ireland over the years. However, one spot that I've done very little exploration in is County Mayo. This is a stunning part of the world, and I'm glad I took the opportunity to traverse it while I was recently on another trip with Bernard. Being from Cork, which is in the southern part of Ireland, means that I have to be hitting this area with a specific destination in mind. Given that I was here for a shoot with Bernard, we decided to take a loop trip around the area so I could see it for myself and experience all it has to offer.

As Idyllic As It Gets

After a short drive along a winding and stunning road, we stopped, jumped out and took another short walk towards one hell of a picturesque scene. A solitary white-walled fisherman’s hut sitting right next to the water’s edge, with many fantastic shooting locations along the banks, promised to yield several shots for us both.

Visiting an Icon

Whale watching is quite popular here plus island hopping over to Sherkin and Cape Clear, which promise to take you back in time to a land not influenced by the manic speed the rest of the world goes through. This area is simply stunning overall, and sitting right on the cliffs that shelter the bay, sits a structure erected to serve as a beacon to the West and a symbol to all of just how great this place is.

10 Minute Long Exposure, Madness or Genuis?

The wind was still blowing from the night before, so I opted to go for an ultra-long exposure of 10 minutes. This would totally smooth out the water, but more importantly, it would allow the movement of the clouds to create streaks in my This works particularly well when the wind is either blowing directly towards the camera or away, as it creates bright and darker areas in the direction of the frame. Now, I didn’t calculate exactly what I was going to set my exposure, aperture, and ISO to; I just winged it, and when the image had finished cooking, I was happy with what I had on the back of the camera. I used my 10-stop filter to achieve this, and while I knew it would be a gamble, I was kind of sure I wouldn't blow my highlights, and then I would be able to recover the shadows in post later.

World Class Location

When it comes to photography locations there are several things that I like to find when I arrive on site. I want something that is raw nature at its finest and this can be rugged cliffs and monster waves, I am particularly fond of jagged formations and more particularly gnarly sea stacks.

ONE SHOT

The location was like an idyllic postcard to be fair, with two trees sitting on a hillside, old original Connemara stone walls crisscrossing the undulations of the hills below them and all surrounded by a magnificent lake, upon arrival, I knew just why Bernard liked it so much. The area was also home to a hundred or so sheep, who were on hand to greet us upon our arrival. The sounds of the ewes and their lambs were very mince to hear, it was like they were either welcoming Bernard back or were telling us to stay out as they made quite the racket and all lined up on the hillside above us. I also knew right then that they would feature in some shots, due to the amount of them and their placements all around us.

Be Fluid

Now when exploring a new location for the first time, it is important to take your time and look at the area with your photographer’s eye, otherwise, you may miss an opportunity to photograph an area, and given that this was my first time at this location with my camera, you would think that I would take my own advice? Absolutely not, as on this occasion I wasn’t exploring alone, I was tagging along with a local who knew the way and moreover the areas of interest.

The Wild Atlantic Way Starts Here

For this week's adventure, I decided to head to where it all begins. The Old Head of Kinsale is an impressive headland that juts out from the bottom of Ireland into the Atlantic Ocean. However, it isn’t possible to walk along the stunning coastline or visit the impressive lighthouse at the very end, as years ago the land was sold to a private company, which set up the Old Head Golf Course, and no public access is permitted anymore
