Photographing a film Icon

As my day on the Dingle Peninsula came to a close, I had to fit one last shoot in and the location I chose was not only a stunning spot with incredible views of the Wild Atlantic, but was also an icon from the film industry’s past. Situated right on the edge of the headland lies a structure that was built with one specific reason, to act as a central area for the film to work it. Ryans’ Daughter is a movie that was made in 1970 and heavily featured the stunning scenery that the Dingle Peninsula offers.

Inspired to Succeed

set about giving myself another personal challenge to try and emulate a shot that master photographer Michael Shainblum had got on that day. His shot encapsulated what it means to photograph large waves and the conditions we had then were similar to today, so I set about trying to get my version.

Sigma 150-600 Monster Waves

My location of choice for this shoot is one that I hadn’t brought you to before, well at least not to the exact spot anyway, The last time I was here was 4 years ago when I took the hike over the cliffs to visit a stunning sea stack that sits proudly in the bay. An Searrach is an icon of the area, and when you have the promise of massive waves crashing, then it is almost a no-brainer to at least give it a go. So that’s exactly what I did.

Light Tamer

Arriving on location at the wrong time is a situation that many photographers face, the solution is to just wait, however, is it possible to bag some shots in the wrong conditions and time and bag some long exposure shots?

Access Denied

There is a lesson for us all in this week’s narrative, and that is to take your shots while you can as you never know when you won’t be able to do it again. The example I share with you is one from a stunning and very popular coastal gem that lies off the coast of Cork, which has been photographed by many for years, however when I arrived recently to my dismay I found that access was closed off, and the farmer has put quite a substantial fence all around, with some very clear signs warning about not trespassing.

Behind the raw | Ep 4 Hidden Beach

This location surprised me very much, not only because I’d never been before nor knew about it, but also because the conditions were not good but good at the same time, which is a mist that hung around for almost the entire duration of my shoot. The image I chose for this edit is the image I used as the cover for the video on my YouTube channel and it features a few items that I liked

The importance of venturing off the beaten path

In this concluding segment of my journey, I aim to highlight the importance of venturing off the beaten path. Despite having passed by this location on numerous occasions in the past, I had never been compelled to explore it further. However, on this particular occasion, spurred by a sense of curiosity and adventure, I decided to deviate from my usual route – a decision that would lead to the discovery of an extraordinary hidden gem.
