Scotland Road-trip August 2022 Day 1& 2
August 2022 saw myself, Diarmuid & Patrick head off on an international trip the stunning Isle of Skye, we spent 5 days in total and it was a trip of EPIC proportions Watch all of my episodes from my 2022 Scotland Photography Road-trip.
Beginning my journey from the bottom of Ireland in Cork at 9pm, I travelled to Limerick to meet up with Diarmuid, we then loaded the gear, food and drinks into the van and hit the road to Belfast, to catch a ferry at 4am from Larne to Cairnryan at 6am, it was then onwards towards the stunning Scottish highlands around Glencoe for stop off and start our journey surrounded by some of the most iconic mountains to photograph.
Now if you have ever visited this location you will know that Buachaille Etive Mòr dominates the landscape there and while in the location it would have been rude not to take at least a couple of photos, however us being us decided to find something new, not by choice mind you, we struggled to find the honey pot location to photograph, running water with the mountain in the background, that being said however I was happy that we had the opportunity to forge a new path and capture some shots unique to our trip.
Now being in the campervan has many advantages and one big one came the following morning when we woke after what can only be described as a night of rain beating the roof down soundtrack, to the most vibrant rainbow I had ever scene, and this coupled with the stunning mountain in the background we were blessed to be in the right place at the right time.
After a mighty fine feed we then of course had to go and shoot the location that draws so many there, the cascades at the base of Buachaille Etive Mòr and we weren’t the only ones, we were joined by millions of flying teeth, AKA midges, who had their sights firmly set on our skin & blood. Nonetheless it was still good to experience this location and plonk our tripods into the holes in the mud that so many had done before us, these locations are honeypot locations for a reason, they are simply stunning.
Now the real adventure was to begin and we set off towards the western coast to reach an island that had been on my mind for a very long time, The mystical Isle of Skye. Crossing the bridge we could sense that something was brewing and as we ate up the Kilometres we we rewarded by vista after vista around each and every corner. This place was living up to what I had dreamt of and we hadn’t even tasted it yet. A quick stop at the side of the road location Strickenlan bridge to grab some shots and some time-lapse of the fleeting light as it danced across the mountains fuelled our excitement even more. We didn’t have time however to hang about as Diarmuid was on a mission, he was after his bucket shot at the Fairy Pools.
We had no sooner arrived here and Diarmuid was off faster than a greyhound out of the traps as the light was fantastic but fading fast, myself and Patrick followed along at our own pace and while I was keeping an eye on where Diarmuid has going so I wouldn’t get lost, I was quickly falling behind as a rapid rate. Each mini summit felt like an achievement only to be dashed when I caught a glimpse of him even further up the hillside, however when I arrived I was just in time to hear the shriek’s of joy and those immortal words were uttered from Diarmuid, “I got my Bucket Shot “ . I was delighted for him, even though I was absolutely knackered after trying to keep up with him. the light was perfect, the composition was spot on, so of course I had to rush in and try and get a version for myself. It would have been rude not to after all.
What a fantastic start to this trip, you can watch the full adventures in the link below or read on to discover what day two had in store for us.
