An expanse of rugged, mountainous land extends to the world-famous Lakes of Killarney in the southwest of County Kerry. Killarney National Park, with its unforgettable combination of mountains, lakes, woodland, and waterfalls, covers 10,000 hectares. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has designated Killarney National Park as a Biosphere Reserve for conservation and research efforts, joining Glacier National Park in Montana, USA.
