Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a captivating journey to Gougane Barra, where I encountered flat calm water, stunning mist, jumping fish, a single moored boat, a small church on an island, perfect reflections, incredible drone footage above the mist, and even dealt with the pesky presence of midges. The Allure of Gougane Barra at Sunrise

As the sun began to rise, I found myself captivated by the serene beauty of Gougane Barra. The calm water of Gougane Barra Lake mirrored the surroundings, creating perfect reflections that enhanced the ethereal atmosphere. The tranquillity of the scene added an air of serenity, intensifying the enchantment of the location. There is an ideal time to photograph here, I was on location at that time and the mist and flat water were the icing on the cake.

Embracing the Mystical Morning Mist

As dawn broke, a delicate veil of mist wrapped Gougane Barra in its embrace. The mist diffused the early morning light, casting a soft, ethereal glow upon the landscape. It was a photographer's dream come true, offering a unique opportunity to capture evocative and enchanting images.

The mist added an element of mystery to the scene, gently concealing and revealing elements as it shifted. I was particularly drawn to the solitary moored boat, standing as a symbol of solitude and tranquillity amidst the misty backdrop. The occasional jumps of fish added a touch of energy and life within the stillness.

The perfect reflections created by the calm water enhanced the allure of the island church. I marvelled at the symmetrical composition formed by the reflection, adding depth and balance to the image. It was a sight that spoke volumes about the tranquillity and timelessness of Gougane Barra.

The Pesky Presence of Midges

While the serene beauty of Gougane Barra was awe-inspiring, it wasn't without its challenges. The presence of midges, those tiny flying insects, added an unexpected element to the photography trip. As I set up my shots, I had to contend with their persistent buzzing and their attempts to land on my skin.

To tackle this issue, I came prepared with insect repellent and protective clothing. Despite the midges' presence, I didn't let it dampen my spirits or deter me from capturing the stunning scenes that unfolded before my eyes. It's important to remember that nature, with all its beauty, also has its inhabitants, and being prepared is key to overcoming such challenges.

The Ideal Time for Photography and having my campervan

Having a campervan allowed me to be at Gougane Barra at the perfect time to capture the magical sunrise. With the flexibility of my campervan, I was able to arrive well before dawn, ( The night before in fact) ensuring I didn't miss the stunning colours and peaceful atmosphere that accompanied the sunrise. Being on-site enabled me to set up my equipment and fully immerse myself in the experience. I knew when I opened my van curtains that I was in for a treat, however, what happened during that morning just blew me away.

Drone Footage

Timing played a crucial role in my photography adventure at Gougane Barra. The early morning light bathed the landscape in a warm, golden glow, creating a magical ambience that enhanced the natural beauty surrounding me.

The stillness of the water during sunrise was unparalleled, offering me the chance to capture striking reflections that amplified the scene's allure. I took advantage of the tranquil conditions to experiment with longer exposures, resulting in silky-smooth water flows and a sense of peacefulness in my shots.

To add a unique perspective to my photography experience, I deployed my drone to capture incredible footage from above the mist. Soaring high in the sky, the drone provided a whole new dimension, revealing the vastness and intricate details of Gougane Barra below. As I soared above the clouds I could see the mist was indeed not just localised to my location, It was spread out as far as the eye could see, only broken up by small pockets which in turn revealed some stunning mountains peaking up through the gaps.
