Chasing Waves and Sunsets: An Unforgettable Photography Adventure with Michael Shainblum
In the world of photography, some moments stand out as truly extraordinary. Such was the case when I had the chance to spend a week with the renowned photographer, Michael Shainblum, in the stunning landscapes of Ireland. Our adventure was filled with thrilling experiences, from capturing the mesmerizing motion of waves with 1/2 second and 1/3 second shots to witnessing Michael's unique dedication as he shot barefoot. Join me on this photographic journey through the captivating Copper Coast in Waterford, where nature had its own plans.
Our journey to the Copper Coast was a culmination of days spent exploring Ireland's breathtaking landscapes. With Michael's passion for intimate abstract photography and captivating timelapses, I had already learned so much. But the Copper Coast was about to show us something truly extraordinary.
As we arrived at the Copper Coast, the setting sun cast a warm glow over the dramatic sea stacks and rugged cliffs. The waves crashing against the shore beckoned us to capture their raw power and graceful motion. My favourite technique of using 1/2 second and 1/3 second shots allowed us to create stunning images that froze the waves in time, yet added some motion to them also. Each frame told a story of the sea's relentless dance with the land.
The sun's descent was a sight to behold, and as we set up our equipment, something unique happened. Michael, in his true California spirit, decided to shoot barefoot. It was a moment of true communion with nature, a symbolic connection to the elements. As he adjusted his settings and composed his shots, it was evident that his dedication knew no bounds.
As we continued to shoot, the tide began its inexorable advance. The waves grew more assertive, making our photographic endeavor increasingly challenging. We were soon surrounded by the surging waters, and the waves began to beat back our efforts. The rapidly changing conditions made it clear that the sunset was slipping through our fingers.
With the tide relentlessly encroaching on our original spot, we had no choice but to move to higher ground. The Copper Coast offered plenty of locations, and we quickly scouted a new vantage point. As we set up our equipment again, the sun, now closer to the horizon, promised to cast an enchanting golden light on the sea stacks, but we could also see the clouds building in the distance.
Despite the odds stacked against us, we remained hopeful of capturing the perfect sunset shot. But, alas, nature had other plans. As the sun sank below the horizon, those clouds enveloped any potential gaps and the moment we had been chasing was gone. The enchanting Copper Coast had offered us its splendor, but a fiery sunset remained elusive.
My adventure with Michael Shainblum had shown me that in photography, as in life, adaptability is key. Nature can be unpredictable, and it is up to us to adjust and make the most of the circumstances. We may not have captured the fiery sunset we had hoped for, but our journey was filled with unforgettable moments, unique shots of waves in motion, and a glimpse into the world of a photographer whose dedication knows no limits.
My time with Michael Shainblum was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience,( Altho I do think we will meet again) and I will forever treasure the lessons learned and the images captured on those unforgettable days.
